What Happens During a Hair Consultation and How to Prepare for Yours

A great hair appointment starts before the color bowl, scissors, or styling tools ever come out.

It starts with a good consultation.

A consultation is where we talk through what you want, what your hair has been through, what is realistically achievable, and what kind of maintenance fits your life.

It is also one of the most important parts of protecting your hair health and avoiding misunderstandings.

Here’s what you can expect during a hair consultation and how to come prepared.

Why the Consultation Matters

Two people can show the exact same inspiration photo and need completely different plans.

Your current color, natural level, previous chemical services, density, texture, condition, budget, and maintenance preferences all affect what makes sense for your hair.

The consultation gives us time to look at the full picture instead of choosing a service based on a photo alone.

At Eleváre, I use the consultation to help answer questions like:

  • What do you love about your current hair?

  • What are you hoping to change?

  • What have you had done in the past?

  • How often do you want to return to the salon?

  • How much styling do you realistically do at home?

  • What kind of budget and maintenance schedule feels comfortable?

  • What is your long-term goal?

Those answers help shape the service plan.

We Start With Your Hair History

Your hair history matters - especially with color and chemical services.

I may ask about:

  • permanent or demi-permanent color

  • box color

  • highlights or bleach

  • vivid color

  • henna

  • perms

  • relaxers

  • smoothing treatments

  • previous color corrections

Even if something was done months ago, it may still be present in the hair.

That information helps me make safer decisions about lightening, coloring, and chemical services.

We Talk About Your Goal

Inspiration photos are incredibly helpful because words like “blonde,” “warm,” “dimensional,” or “natural” can mean something different to everyone.

Photos give us a visual reference.

But inspiration photos are exactly that — inspiration.

Your final result depends on your starting point, hair condition, previous color, natural texture, and how much change is safely possible in one appointment.

My job is to help translate the inspiration into something that works for your actual hair.

We Look at What Is Realistic Today

Sometimes your goal is completely achievable in one session.

Sometimes it is a multi-appointment process.

This is especially common with:

  • color corrections

  • major lightening

  • removing dark artificial color

  • vivid color removal

  • gray transitions

  • heavily processed hair

If your hair needs a slower approach, I will explain why.

I would rather create a healthy long-term plan than push the hair too far just to reach a photo in one day.

We Discuss Maintenance Before We Begin

A color can be beautiful and still be the wrong choice for your lifestyle.

That is why we talk about maintenance before the service.

We may discuss:

  • how often you will need salon appointments

  • whether you prefer lower-maintenance grow-out

  • gloss or toner appointments

  • home-care products

  • heat styling

  • gray coverage expectations

  • how quickly your natural root will become visible

There is no “best” maintenance schedule.

There is only the one that works for you.

We Confirm the Service + Estimated Investment

Before beginning, I want you to understand what we are doing.

We will confirm:

  • the service plan

  • estimated appointment time

  • estimated pricing

  • what is included

  • whether future sessions may be needed

If your goal requires a different service than what was originally booked, we may need to adjust the appointment or schedule additional time.

This is why completing your consultation form before your visit is so helpful.

What Should You Bring to a Hair Consultation?

You do not need to bring much, but a few things are extremely helpful.

Inspiration Photos

Bring a few photos of looks you like.

It can also be useful to bring photos of what you do not like.

That gives me more context about your preferences.

Current Hair Photos

For virtual consultations or pre-appointment forms, clear photos of your current hair are very helpful.

Natural lighting is best when possible.

Front, sides, and back can all provide useful information.

Your Hair History

Try to remember what has been done to your hair over the last couple of years.

If you do not know the exact color or product used, that is okay.

Share whatever you remember.

Your Realistic Maintenance Preferences

Be honest about how often you want to come to the salon.

If you only want appointments three or four times a year, tell me.

If you love coming in every four to six weeks, tell me that too.

Neither is wrong.

It simply changes the plan.

Should You Come With Clean or Dirty Hair?

For most consultations, your hair does not need to be freshly washed.

I usually want to see how your hair naturally behaves.

However, try to avoid arriving with extremely heavy product buildup, excessive oil, or a style that completely hides your natural texture.

If special preparation is needed for a particular service, I will let you know beforehand.

What If You Do Not Know What You Want?

That is completely okay.

You do not need to know the technical name of the service you need.

You can simply explain:

  • what you dislike about your current hair

  • what you want it to feel like

  • what you want to be easier

  • how often you want to maintain it

  • what kind of overall look you are drawn to

Part of my job is helping you figure out what service actually supports those goals.

What If I Tell You Your Goal Is Not Possible Right Now?

It does not necessarily mean “never.”

Sometimes it means:

  • not today

  • not in one session

  • not without compromising hair health

  • not without changing the maintenance commitment

A good consultation should include honest expectations.

I would rather explain the safest route clearly than promise something your hair cannot realistically support.

Consultations Are Part of the Experience

At Eleváre by Gina O. | Hair + Beauty, consultations are not an afterthought.

They are how we build a service plan that makes sense for your hair, your lifestyle, and your goals.

You should feel comfortable asking questions and understanding the plan before we begin.

The best results usually happen when stylist and client are working toward the same goal with clear expectations.

Not Sure What to Book?

If you are unsure which service fits your goal, a consultation is a great place to start.

You do not need to know salon terminology or choose the perfect service on your own.

Bring your questions, your inspiration, and your hair history.

We will figure out the rest together.

Soft. Polished. Still you.
